Lucanus (Marcus Annaeus) Civilis Belli, Italic type, initial spaces filled up with pasted up small wood letters, dated to colophon at rear (S4), title dusty, light age yellowing, occasional spotting, bookplate of Faulque de Jonquières, early ownership notes to title and some scribbles, a few marginalia throughout, 18th century calf, title to spine, marbled endpapers, a.e.g., extremities and spine rubbed, [Adams L1557; Aldo Manuzio tipografo 59; Censimento 16 CNCE 36129; Renouard 33.3; Ahmanson-Murphy 56], 8vo, Aldus Manutius, Venice, 1502.

*** First Aldine edition of the Pharsalia with a prefatory note by Marco Antonio Mauroceno. Aldus based his text on the 1493 Venice edition, but with corrections from a superior manuscript supplied by Marco Antonio Morosini, to whom is addressed the dedicatory letter. Aldus published this edition a few months before adopting the dolphin device.
