Kashmir or Northern India, late 18th - first half 19th century

Opaque pigments heightened with gold on wove paper, the horizontal composition depicting Arjuna seated on his Kapidhwaja chariot donated to him by Agni (the God of Fire) and able to conquer all directions, and Lord Krishna as his charioteer, the scene depicting the moment preceding the crucial discussion about dharma between Krishna and Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita when Arjuna refuses to fight Bhishma in the battle of the Kurukshetra, Krishna holding his transcendental conch shell (Pancajanya) ready to blow it and foreshadowing the death of his next opponent, set within red and yellow rules, mounted, framed and glazed, 21.7cm x 19.2cm including the frame.
