Karel Van Der Pluym was the great-nephew of Rembrandt. His paintings are extremely rare, with only 17 known works surviving. Given his family connections and his bold style, and despite the lack of concrete evidence, it is thought that the artist studied with Rembrandt in Amsterdam, where his uncle Willem van der Pluym, a subject of a drawing by Rembrandt, lived in the early to mid-1640s. In 1648 Van Der Pluym joined the Leiden Guild of painters, and went on to become the Dean of the Guild from 1654-1655.
