TWO WOMEN’S OPEN COATS
Sindh, Pakistan, mid-20th century
Both of heavy cotton, comprising a coat with the main panels finely worked in predominantly pale turquoise silk in a variety of stitches with large-scale squares to the front, later embellished with metal-wrapped thread and spangles, the back and sleeves with horizontal bands of repeating geometric motifs, with fine mirror-work areas throughout, ‘recycled’ with lesser bands of red at the sides, the neck opening with ribbon marked ‘SP-In-104’, 86cm long; and another coat, similar, with neck opening to front, the front with large-scale squares in orange and purple, the back in blue and off-whites, with purple and fuchsia highlights, delineated in black silks, 92cm long.
