He was a contemporary of John Smart, George Engleheart, Richard Cosway and William Wood. Born deaf and dumb he lived and worked in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, from 1760. His brother kept the house and acted as liaison between Crosse and his clients, which included the Prince of Wales and the Dukes of Cumberland and Gloucester.
