An early 20th century Burmese unmarked silver bowl or jar, Rangoon circa 1910
Of rounded ovoid form with fold over rim. The body with embossed and chased decoration of the tale of the nat (spirit) Ma Swe Oo, a country girl weaver who was killed by a tiger sent by the younger Taung-pyone brother, Min Galay, after spurning his advances, this depicted as a tiger attacking a woman, also with the two sword wielding brothers, all within architraves reserved with foliate scrolls. All below a convex band chased with foliate scrolls and other decorative bands, the underside with chased stylised betel leave.
Height – 11 cm / 4.3 inches
Weight – 331 grams / 10.64 ozt
Ma Swe Oo became the patroness of weavers.
