THREE GILT AND TURQUOISE-GLAZED LAJVARDINA POTTERY TILES
Iran, 13th - 14th century

Each of hexagonal shape, different in size, each glazed in turquoise and overglaze painted in red, black and white outlines and then gilt, the repeating decoration consisting of six rosettes and lush vegetal sprays emanating from a single rosette medallion positioned in the centre, the surface of the larger tile gently moulded, the decoration of the smaller tiles raised with the addition of small mounds of transparent glaze inside the red and black outlines, revealed by the wearing of the gilding, the larger tile 9.5cm diam, the smaller tiles 7.9cm diam.
