Boulogne-sur-Mer was the gateway for trade and travel between Britain and France, serving as an essential economic link. It was also the arrival point for Queen Victoria's state visit in 1855, and this image was part of an album commissioned by Baron James de Rothschild, owner of the line, for presentation to the imperial court on that occasion. The Royal Collection holds a carbon print of this image, as part of an album of prints presented to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a memento of their state visit to France from 18-27 August 1855 [ref.RCIN 2584500].
