A Victorian Scottish sterling silver gilt basin, Glasgow 1864 by John Miller and Co
Copying a mid-18th century Portuguese Lisbon example. Of shaped oval form upon four cast foliate scroll feet. The embossed edge with foliage, scrolls and husk shells against a textured ground. Later engraved underneath with a presentation inscription reading “These two dishes presented to Robert George Wilmot Berkley by the Tenant Farmers of the Spectchley Park Estate on his coming of age 23rd April 1919”. Fully marked to the rim.

Captain Robert George Wilmot Berkeley (1898 – 1969) was High Sheriff of Worcestershire in 1933, and Deputy Lieutenant of the county in 1952. He the son of Robert Valentine Berkeley (1853-1940) and Rose Willmot (1861-1922), she was the daughter of Frederick Willmott of Warley Place, Essex.
grandson of Robert Berkeley (1823-1897) and Lady Mary Caroline Browne (1829-1924), the daughter of Thomas Browne, 3rd Earl of Kenmore (1789-1871).
