Opaque pigments, ink and pencil heightened in gold on paper, comprising a standing portrait of a Qajar lady holding a fruit in one hand and a small wine cup on the latter, wearing a diaphanous orange headscarf over a fashionable striped termeh cap embellished with a red gem-encrusted gold aigrette, in the background a Westernised romantic landscape with a fort, a river and distant mountains, with a faded black ink signature and date at the bottom reading Ali Quli 1274 AH (1857), framed within an impressed (nakhuni) paper border with conch shells on the corners and floral sprays around the sides, 19.3cm x 12cm; and five portraits of women in a much more naïve and folkish style, two of them wearing a long black chador, one playing the tambourine, and the latter two relaxing, one portrait signed in red ink the work of Abul Hasan Naqqashbashi, the largest 18cm x 11cm.
