A CHINESE SILVER GOOSE-FORM RHYTON/LAMP

唐至宋 銀鵝形角盃

The zoomorphic vessel is formed in the shape of a recumbent goose with its neck arched back over the body and clutching a shallow cup with its open beak, the vessel is decorated throughout with feather-moulded wings and incised decoration, to the underside of the goose there are two floral roundels surrounded by further floral sprays, the cup with floral sprays to the exterior and the interior plain.

NOTES:

This shape is most like to have been inspired by Sassanian or Byzantine metalware prototypes and the exact purpose of these zoomorphic vessels are still unclear. Studies suggest that these may very well have been used as lamps or censers. Several examples of this shape in ceramics can be observed in other collections, often seen mainly in ceramic types, for similar example see; Watson, W. Tang and Liao Ceramics, London 1984, no. 134, p. 154 and Christie's Hong Kong, 6th October 2015 Lot 83.
