PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION

Opaque pigments, ink and white wash on paper, comprising three vertical portraits of tradesmen in their daily attires and activities, carrying their tools, each face marked by long working hours and little rest, every portrait accompanied by an identifying inscription in red ink, the Courtly Book Binder Mullah Mohammad Taqi; the itinerant Pharmacist Kerbelayi Mahmud 'Attar; and the itinerant Rag-and-Bone Man Mirza Kazem, all signed by the artist Abul Hasan, the versos filled with several inventory numbers and stickers, the largest 16cm x 12.2cm; a grisaille portrait of a young nobleman with a tall kaj kolah headdress, set within polychrome concentric borders with gilt vegetal sprays, 34cm x 24cm; and another portrait of a young Qajar aristocrat, wearing heavily bejewelled bazubands and termeh coat, holding a rose, in front of him the books he ought to study, mounted on a white cardboard frame, 36cm x 30cm.
