An interesting matched pair of George III sterling silver trencher salts

An interesting matched pair of George III sterling silver trencher salts

one London 1799 by John Wakelin and Robert Garrard (reg. 20th Oct 1792), the other circa 1770 by John Parker and Edward Wakelin (active 1759-1777). Each in the William III style, of squat circular form with ribbed sides and dished centres. The Wakelin and Garrard example, engraved underneath with an arm in armour holding a sword entwined with a serpent , below a baron’s coronet. Fully marked to base and lion passant to centre. The other example engraved with a crest of a a serpent nowed, marked only with maker's mark thrice to base. (2)

Diameter – 8.5 cm / 3.3 inches

Weight - 368 grams / 12.41 ozt

The serpent nowed crest is for Cavendish, Fleming, Honnor, Huxley, Lante, McCandish, Mathilez, Melton, Morison, Pringle, Simpson, and Southern.

Lord George, Fredreick, and John Cavendish are recorded in the Wakelin ledgers: Schrager, L., The Royal and Aristocratic Patronage of Wakelin and Tayler, 1776-92, (2006) The journal of the silver society, no 21, p.94,

Lord John Cavendish PC (1732 – 1796), fourth and youngest son of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire, KG, PC (1698 – 1755)

further examination of the Wakelin ledgers may reveal the orders of George Augustus Henry Cavendish MP (1754-1834), made 1st Earl of Burlington in 1831, ordered a pair of sauce boats of 1784-5 by Wakelin and Taylor, offered these rooms, 25 March 2020, lot 576, and a smaller pair sold these rooms, 11 June 2021, lot 513 (£1000 incl. prem).

The other crest is for Cornelius O'Callaghan, 1st Viscount Lismore (1775 – 1857), styled 2nd Baron Lismore 1798-1806. From 1806 to 1807 he sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom as a Member of Parliament for Lostwithiel, a rotten borough in Cornwall controlled by Lord Mount Edgcumbe.
