GWALIOR WEDDING ALBUM, KATHMANDU, oblong folio album 37 x 28.5 cm., partially dis-bound, with some pages split and loose, containing a total of 107 gelatin prints, approx. 17x13cm & 14x11cm., with typewritten identifying labels mounted below most prints. All prints in vg condition. An album documenting the Marriage in Kathmandu, of Jivajirao Scindia, Maharaja of Gwalior, to princess Lekha Divyeshwari Devi (later known as Vijaya Raje Scindia) This took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, on 21st February 1941. This album documents the marriage ceremonies, processions, and meetings between the Maharaja and various Nepali Rana dignitaries. These include Juddha Shamsher Rana, the Maharaja of Nepal, The King of Nepal Mahendra; General Kaiser Shamsher Rana, various Indian Princes and Nepalese notables attending the ceremony; scenes of Kathmandu temples and architecture, including Rana Palaces and gardens
Jivajirao Scindia, (b.1916- d.1961) was the ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior in central India, from 1925 until 1947. After the state was absorbed into independent India, he was granted a privy purse, certain privileges, and the use of the title Maharaja of Gwalior by the Government of India, which he retained until his death in 1961. He also served as the Rajpramukh (governor) of the state of Madhya Bharat until 1956.
Lekha Divyeshwari Devi (later known as Vijaya Raje Scindia (12 Oct. 1919 – 25 Jan. 2001)
Vijaya Raje Scindia was born in 1919 at Sagar in present-day Madhya Pradesh, the eldest child of Thakur Mahendra Singh of Kotla State (U.P.), a government officer, by his second wife, Chuda Devashwari Devi.She was named Lekha Divyeshwari Devi at birth. Her father was a deputy collector in the provincial administration. Her mother was the daughter of former Commander-in-chief of the Nepalese Army Commanding-General Raja Khadga Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, the nephew of founder of Rana dynasty of Nepal, Jang Bahadur Kunwar Rana. After her husband’s death in 1961, she went on to become a noted Indian politician, and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962. Initially a member of the Indian National Congress party, they parted ways in 1967, and she joined the Jana Sangh, and later became an influential member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
