Portaits of General Mite and Lucia Zarate, c.1880s

Two albumen print cartes-de-visite, image size 8.5 x5.2cm, by Brown, Barnes & Bell Studio, Liverpool, each with typed caption on verso, comprising a portrait of Francis Joseph Flynn (1864-1898), known as 'General Mite', Circus Performer and Showman, wearing an elegant suit, and leaning on a chair; typed caption verso: General Mite, 17 years old, weighs 9 pounds. He is bright, smart and intelligent, and a perfect man in miniature; and a portrait of Lucia Zarate (1864-1890) in an elegant black dress, standing on a table next to a pitcher; typed caption verso: Greatest Wonder of the Age! Señorita Lucía Zárate. This young lady is 19 years of age, weighs only 4 3/4 pounds, is 20 inches high, and perfect in form and feature.

Lucía Zárate was a Mexican entertainer with dwarfism who performed in sideshows. At the age of 12, she moved to the United States, where she was exhibited for her small stature. Later, she partnered with American performer Francis Joseph Flynn to exhibit internationally.
