A PAINTED AND LACQUERED WALL MIRROR
Iran, 20th century

Of rectangular shape with a niche-like cusped top, the panels polychrome-painted and lacquered, the decoration on the exterior consisting of two courtly ladies in a Qajar interior, one seated on the ground finishing her toilette and fixing her hair, the latter holding a water ewer, possibly used to carry water to the first lady to freshen herself up, the motif clearly evoking female beauty rituals and morning routine, the interior decorated with lively birds, either in pairs or alone, perched on vegetal branches and lush floral bushes, the mirror itself decorated with a polychrome-painted floral band and encased within a lacquered frame with flower heads against a golden ground, 69cm x 33.5cm.
