PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
Iran, 19th century

Of typical compressed bulbous shape, resting on a splayed foot, rising to a tall, cylindrical neck with everted, reinforced rim, the openwork exterior decorated with three registers of engraved figural decoration, around the body two bands of interlocking circular medallions with enthroned kings, princes, warriors, mullahs, Sufi dervishes, acrobats, dancers and mythical creatures, the neck featuring similar figures in oval medallions, all against scrolling rosette sprays and foliate trellis, several horizontal bands of vegetal decoration around the foot, shoulders and rim, the neck pierced at a later stage to accommodate a hanging chain and the foot opened and replaced with a glass filler to convert the vase into a lamp, 11cm diam. and 23.5cm high.
