TWO KASHAN POTTERY BOWLS WITH PANEL-STYLE DECORATION
PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
Kashan, Iran, 12th - 13th century

Comprising two high-sided bowls of hemispherical shape, each resting on a short foot and rising to a wide circular rim, the interior decorated with radial designs in the panel-style, one with turquoise bands emanating from the centre of a star also issuing six triangular panels outlined in black and filled with vegetal scrolls and pseudo-calligraphic cartouches, the rim painted black and the outside plain, 19.5cm diam.; and the other painted similarly with the addition of manganese purple to the palette, decorated with an oval design to the centre surrounded by two concentric circles and radial panels alternating cross-hatching patterns, petal-shaped motifs, and crossing bands on vegetal ground, the outside with vertical strokes and a single horizontal band, 20.2cm diam.
