Lydia, Baroness Dunn (1940 –) was Deputy Chairman of the HSBC and worked as an advisor to Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Geoffrey Howe and other ministers on Hong Kong issues. She was created a Dame of the Order of the British Empire in 1989 and in 1990 became a life peer as Baroness Dunn of Hong Kong Island and of Knightsbridge in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

This work is a composite panorama across twelve individual artworks originally hung either as hanging scrolls or panels of a large screen. Together they depict a scene known as the Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden, derived originally from a legendary work by Li Gonglin who was present at the original gathering of 16 literati in 1088. Various scenes in the overall composition depict the purported participants in the event with the distinctive groupings including Su Shi writing out calligraphy, Li Gonglin completing his painting, Chen Jingyuan playing a musical instrument, Mi Fu inscribing a stone and the Buddhist master Yuan Tong discoursing on Nirvana.
