The painting is a study for the fourth of the artist's 'Fourteen Stations of the Cross', permanently installed in the Grade I listed Church of St John on Bethnal Green, designed by Sir John Soane.

This lot is accompanied by a print by the same artist titled 'Mater Dolorosa', which is signed, titled and numbered. The artist produced the print at Limberhurst Press in 2005. It is a print study for the 14th Station of the Cross and features in CHRIS GOLLON: Fourteen Stations of the Cross, published by IAP Fine Art in 2019.
