TAXIDERMY: A RARE CASE OF NEW ZEALAND BIRDS, LATE 19TH CENTURY,

a Victorian case of 9 birds mostly endemic (only found in) to New Zealand. Any natural history, particularly taxidermy, specimens from New Zealand are exceedingly rare and highly sought after by collectors.

The birds in the case are -

  1. Pied Stilt (Himantopus leucocephalus)
  2. Weka (Gallirallus australis). Also known as the Māori hen or woodhen). Endemic to New Zealand.
  3. Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia). The largest species of tern.
  4. Black-billed Gull (Chroicocephalus bulleri). Also known as the Buller's Gull, and in Māori as the tarāpuka. Endemic to New Zealand.
  5. Eastern Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica baueri). Known as kuaka in Māori.
  6. New Zealand Grebe / Dabchick (Poliocephalus rufopectus). Also known as weweia in Māori. Endemic to New Zealand (only 1,200-1,400 mature individuals are estimated to remain in the wild).
  7. Little Pied Cormorant (Microcarbo melanoleucos). Also known as Little Shag, and kawaupaka in Māori.
  8. Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae). Endemic to Australia (occasional vagrant to New Zealand).
  9. Banded Dotterl (Charadrius bicinctus). Also known as the double-banded plover, and in Māori tūturiwhatu; tuturiwhatu; and pohowera. Endemic to New Zealand. A unique and rare opportunity to add rarely offered specimens to your collection.
