*** A masterwork of early Italian literature, the Divine Comedy (1321) documents Dante Alighieri's fictional passage through hell (Inferno), purgatory (Purgatorio), and heaven (Paradiso), accompanied by Virgil. This 1477 edition, printed in Venice by Wendelin of Speyer, and edited by Cristoforo Beradi da Pesaro, is remarkable in that it is the first edition of the work to include extensive commentary, written by Jacopo della Lana.
