Elgar(Edward)

Elgar (Edward)

Autograph letter signed ('Edward Elgar') to Alfred Littleton, reading in part "We are here all safely and find our flat very simple but comfortable and with a glorious view. It is really one of the best situations in Rome and the walks on the Pincian are at our door almost which is most convenient for Alice. Please let Wood have all the material for his performance as soon as you can as there may be errors in the parts and he may have an early opportunity to rehearse. I do not think you had better print for sale until his performance his over, in case of mistakes, and for the first time for years, the parts go to the first performance without my playing them through with Austin. I can't tell how much I shall be able to work here: there are voices most vociferous and pianos most pianiferous in the street which is otherwise quiet, but I'll report later", four pages, folding marks, 4to, Via Gregoriana 38/III, Rome, 9 November 1907; with another autograph letter from Elagr to Littleton, informing him that he has received the copy of 'Das Reich' and adding "Will one of your people write to Herr Reiners and tell him I cannot possibly alter the passage? I remember his artistic singing with pleasure in Rotterdam. You will see that his letter requests an alteration of the only real tenor bit in the work and his pencilled propositions alter the melody into nothing. A tenor who has not an 'A' at the low pitch must be a curiosity", three pages, some marginal yellowing, 4to, Via Gregoriana 38, Rome, 23 November 1907 (2)
