LADI KWALI (C. 1925 - 1984), NIGERIA: A large stoneware circular bowl, with textured exterior, the base impressed LK marks

24cm diameter

Notes:

Ladi Kwali was born in 1925 in Kwali village in the ancient potting region of Gwari. She trained in the traditional methods of production, building up her vessels in coils before firing them in the open air in a bonfire of dry vegetation.

She achieved international recognition in 1954 after she was invited to join the studio of the famous British ceramicist, Michael Cardew, when he opened a studio in northern Nigeria. Under Cardew’s instruction, Kwali learnt modern pottery techniques including wheel throwing and the potter’s wheel. Cardew was so taken with Ladi Kwali's ceramics that he took her on an extensive tour of the United States in 1971-2

She took over the affairs of the Centre after Cardew. She yearned to make the craft of pottery making accessible to more women and during her tenure, the Centre added four more women from Gwari: Lami Toto, Assibi Iddo, Halima Audu and Kande Ushafa.

Ladi Kwali was awarded an MBE (Member of the order of the British Empire) in 1963.
