The present work is recorded in the Fondazione Zeri photo archive as fully attributed to Monsu Bernardo (no. 48460). After training in his native Denmark, Bernhard Keil worked in Rembrandt’s studio and then, in 1651, left the Dutch Republic for Italy, where he eventually settled in Rome. Other works by the artist can be found in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (The Lacemaker), in the Boijmans Museum van Beuningen in Rotterdam, (Family Group in an Interior) and in the Princeton University Art Museum, (Seated Girl with Wreaths of Roses).
