TAXIDERMY/ ENTOMOLOGY: BUTTERFLY WINGS TRAY, EARLY-MID 20TH CENTURY

hundreds of genuine butterfly wings artistically arranged and displayed under glass. Mounted in wood as a tray, handles either side. With diagonal inlaid wood marquetry surround.

Originally produced as a souvenir for the tourist trade in Rio de Janeiro (as detailed in the piece). A large and impressive example of its type. In good condition.

The striking blue wings are that of the Giant Blue Morpho butterfly. Their iridescence remaining bright despite age. Other species used in the piece include the 46.5cms long x 28 cms wide.
