Marthe Armitage

Chiswick House

signed Marthe Armitage (lower right)
lino cut printed in colours
81 x 56 cm (32 x 22 in)

Trained at the Chelsea School of Art, Marthe has specialised in printing from the 1960s, designing wall papers that she hand prints in her studio on Strand-on-the Green. A past Master of the Art Workers Guild, since 2004 she has been represented by classic interior design specialists Hamilton Weston. In 2014 an exhibition of her work was held at Hogarth House. She is the subject of a book on her life and work written by Alison Harley, published last year: The Making of Marthe Armitage, Artist and Patternmaker.

Of Chiswick House and her work Marthe comments: I have known and walked in the grounds of Chiswick House nearly all my life. For many years it seemed to be so scruffy and unloved, but it gradually came to be realised what a very special and important house it is. What a joy it was when it was opened and we could see the stunningly beautiful rooms and spaces; a house, not for living in but for music and parties and I like to think that perhaps Handel himself might have visited and even played there. This linocut which I did in the early years of this century was an attempt to depict it. But I would really like to have another 20 years of life to do a series of linocuts of the statues, the trees, the bridge, the conservatory…

Donated by the artist.
