*** Oronce Finé was a French mathematician and cartographer. In 1531 he became professor of mathematics at the Collège Royale, founded by the King the year before, where he taught until his death. Finé was one of the most prolific authors of mathematical books of his time, and he worked in a wide range of mathematical fields, including practical geometry, arithmetic, optics, gnomonics and astronomy.
