A Victorian sterling silver ‘castle top’ vinaigrette, Birmingham 1845 by Nathaniel Mills

Of shaped rectangular form with waisted sides, the hinged lid raised by a chased foliate thumbpiece. The lid with an engraved and engine turned scene of a tall slender church overlooking a loch or lake, with a sailboat in the mid-ground, edged with engraved foliate scrolls. The obverse with alternating plain and engine turned bands centred with a shield shape cartouche with engraved initials MAB in flourished cursive script. The gilt interior with a hinged grill with pierced and engraved decoration of an oval of foliate scrolls and flower heads, cornered with leaves. Fully marked, grill with duty mark only.

Length – 3.8 cm / 1.5 inches

Weight – 20 grams / 0.64 ozt
