A mid-Victorian sterling silver vesta case, London 1860 by Benjamin Barling

Of rectangular form with ring attachment, the hinged cover opening to reveal a gilt interior. The exterior with engraved floral decoration and foliate scrolls, the lid with a circular cartouche engraved with initials G.F.W. Serrated striker to side. Fully marked to interior base, part-marked to interior lid, also with retailer’s stamp ‘Thompson & Co, 8 New Bond Street, London’.

Length – 3 cm / 1.25 inches

Weight – 8.6 grams / 0.28 ozt

Vesta cases were first introduced in the late 1850’s
