A FRAGMENTARY COPTIC TAPESTRY PANEL
Possibly Egypt, Near East, late Byzantine - early Islamic period, 5th - 6th century

The tapestry woven in flax and wool in red, green, and dark brown on white ground, with a lion in profile in a white circle framed by a dark brown square within an outer border of sinuous dark brown lines and alternating coloured dots, framed and glazed, the panel 22cm x 22cm, 32.8cm x 34cm including the frame.
