A CEREMONIAL PROCESSION LEADING TO A DURGA SHRINE

Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the horizontal composition depicting a ceremonial procession with a courtly lady on an elephant howdah, leaving the palace with a great gathering of men and women bearing offering trays and gifts, the procession leading to a shrine in the middle of the forest, at the shrine's entrance a statue of a female goddess with sword and trisula (trident), possibly Durga, two lines of black ink Devanagari script against ochre ground at the top of the composition, set within bright red borders, 19.6cm x 30.6cm.
