Although inscribed Essex on the reverse, Pin Mill is in fact in Suffolk, located on the Orwell, down stream from Ipswich, and upstream from Harwich and Felixstowe. Historically it was a busy port, known both as a centre for the repair and maintenance of Thames barges and for its smuggling. With still a very active sailing community, it has overseen a resurgence of interest in barges, hosting the annual Pin Mill Barge Match, now in its 59th year. As for the smuggling...
