'This is the Thames estuary where [Bernard] spent much of his free time when a student sailing in one of the last of the Thames barges, The Arrow, skippered by a great character, Captain Philpotts. Philpotts knew the estuary and marshes very well, his First World War service having been making parts for radio location in an abandoned Price's candle faxtory on the marshes, eerie and sinister especially on night shift, near dumps of animal carcasses... refuse from the candle-making.' (Pamela Myers, unpublished notes from 2008)
