A LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY JAPANESE CARVED WOODEN FIGURE OF A SHOJO late Meiji / early Taisho period, modelled as a laughing boy with a thick head of hair in robes tied at the waist with his toes exposed, holding a cup/bowl in one hand and a small brush/broom in the other, 44cm high

A shōjō is a kind of Japanese sea spirit with a red face and hair and a fondness for alcohol, usually depicted in the form of a mischievous boy. The legend is the subject of a Noh play of the same name.
