Boccaccio (Giovanni) Decamerone, fourth edition, woodcut printer’s device on title and two further leaves at end, large historiated initials, intermittent waterstaining throughout, lighter towards end, some spotting, side notes just shaved in places, later red paper boards, marbled pastedowns, scuffed and worn, [Adams B2159; Brunet I, 1002], 4to, Giunti, Florence, 1587. *** Later edition of the ‘censored’ Decameron, edited by the humanist Leonardo Salviati (1540-1589). He modified the text of 52 novels in order to please the Inquisition, which had banned the book. Salviati is one of the main representatives of the debate on language in the 16th century. He became consul of the Florentine Academy in 1566 and Knight of the Order of Santo Stefano in 1569. His fame is especially linked to the foundation of the 'Accademia della Crusca’ (1582-1583) and the project of a historical national dictionary.
