Bree Family Lot 69-74 – Two 18th century steel wax seals, circa 1750-80

one with an impaled coat of arms within a foliate surround, the other with the arms for Bree with a cadency mark for a first son within a foliate scroll surround surmounted by a mask and rustication, the shaped section with chain attachment with a George III shilling, 1816 and a William IV six pence, 1837. (2)

The arms are fore Bree impaling Blencowe

The impaled arms are for Rev. Thomas Bree (d.1778) son of Thomas Bree (d.1749) who married Anne Blencowe, daughter of John Blencowe esq. of Marston St. Lawrence and Jane Holbeck (d.1756).

The seal with a cadency mark, almost certainly pertains to the Rev Thomas before the death of his father in 1749.

Rev. Thomas’s second son The Rev. William Thomas Bree, rector from 1823 to 1863, acquired a reputation as an authority on botany and entomology.
