Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng period.

The tall ovoid body painted with a scene in an interior with a husband and wife saying their goodbyes, her lover hiding beneath the table waiting for the man's departure, the waisted neck with two figures in a landscape, 41cm H.

清雍正 粉彩繪人物故事圖紋瓶

According to an old folk tale a merchant's wife had an affair with their neighbour. In order to signal to her lover that the master of the house is leaving for a long business trip, she makes him wear a green hat and thus sends a message it is safe for the suitor to pay her a visit.
