Mikhail Larionov was the lifelong partner to fellow leader of the Russian avant-garde, Natalia Goncharova. The present lot is a portrait of the Russian ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872 – 1929), founder of the Ballet Russes. The Ballet Russes revolutionised ballet and had a huge influence on 20th-century art, theatre, fashion and interior design.
