One of the most prominent Op artists in Iraq, Hashim Samarchi studied art at the Baghdad Fine Art Academy 1962-66 and then went on to develop his style and graphic techniques further together with Rafa Al-Nasiri and Salem Al-Dabbagh during a two year period (1967-69) at the Gravura em cobre, funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Upon his return to Baghdad together with fellow artist Dia Azzawi, Rafa Al-Nasiri, Salih Al-Jumayi, Ismail Fattah and Muhammad Mahr Al-Din founded the New Vision avant garde group of artist whose manifesto was to bring new and daring ideas based on modern artistic and cultural values. He has since exhibited at various exhibitions and biennales across Europe and the Middle East.

The works listed are from the collection of works he produced whilst at Gravura in Lisbon as part of limited series which are considered unique as they were part a period just before he solidified his Op Art ideas and for which he is better known.
