His 1562 Apology of the Church of England was the defining document and statement of faith for the Church of England under Elizabeth I and was part of an ongoing debate with Thomas Harding. ‘A Defence of the Apologie’ ensured that Jewel became recognised as "the champion of, and for a time the most famous bishop in, the English reformed church" (ODNB)
