λ A CARVED MOTHER-OF-PEARL SHELL PLAQUE WITH CHRISTIAN ICONOGRAPHY
Jerusalem, Holy Land, 19th century
Of typical circular shape, framed within a thin brass frame, carved with the Last Supper, Jesus to the centre, the twelve disciples around him, a banner inscribed with 'Jerusalem' below the scene, and two roundels either side, one carved with the crowns of the Three Kings and the North Star, symbols of Jesus' birth, opposite a roundel with the Crown of Thorns, a symbol of his crucifixion, bands of openwork vegetal and floral trellis below, the back plain, 21cm at widest point.
