A large collection of letters from various figures, including one from Scottish Theologian John McLeod Campbell to his daughter, reads in part “...This is not the place where papa is just now but it is a place near it - where papa was long ago…” three pages, mailing folds, Edinburgh, 18 January, 1843; another from Sir Hector Alexander, to Henry Woollcombe, reads in part “See enclose an open letter to your address from Captain J. Fisher of the Bengal Army, on the subject of a Legacy of £4000 under the will of the late Admiral Vincent, in which it appears he is entitled to…”, signed “Hector Alexander”, three pages, mailing folds, London, 12 December, 1834; another from George Bailie reads in part “From the representation of your character (by a Lady that knows you) - From the Philanthropy of your Heart, which not only appears by your subscribing towards supplying our brave troops on the continent with warm clothing, but also from your other Acts of Benevolence, I have come to the Resolution of addressing you (which perhaps may appear irregular being personally unknown to each other) in soliciting your Hand in Marriage.”, three pages, mailing folds, wax seal, Sunderland, 13 December 1793; one from John Gale Jones to James Smith, reads in part “I hope you will excuse the liberty I take in addressing you a few lines - you will, by this time have seen that I am subpoena’d by the Crown to give evidence on the approaching trials… I am returned to trouble you with a request, which, if it be convenient and agreeable I hope you will grant… accommodate me if you can for a few days or can recommend me to any private friend, I shall return it as a particular favour…”, three pages, mailing folds, 29 April 1798; another from William Wells to his solicitor, reads in part “You are very good in not scolding me for deceiving you in the conclusion you had made of my visiting Brighton this winter… I am please indeed that you approve of the mode of teaching adopted by me in fact, I am flattered in every quarter that my pupils have made a considerable progress this last half year, and I shall be much disappointed if you do not acknowledge the ensuing 6 months to be more gratifying from the progress of your dear boy.”, three pages, mailing folds, Brighton, January 19 1814; one from Sir Home Popham, reads in part “I have troubled Mr Scott to take charge of the chart of Prince of Wales…”, one page, mailing folds, July 25 [1797]; one from actress Lena Ashwell, reads in part “I am returning article 41 with very many apologies for the long time I have kept the [?]”, one page, mailing folds, July 19th, n.y.; and many others (c.80)
