Autograph Collection.- Authors

Group of autograph and typed letters addressed to Mr John Higgins from various prominent authors, comprising: C.P. Snow (four typed letters, one reading "Yes I should like to write something for the Personal Column. I am not sure, however, that I can promise to write before July. I am in the last stages of a new novel- of quite a different kind from Strangers and Brothers- and I expect to finish this by the end of June", one page, 20 May 1971); Kingsley Amis (autograph letter thanking Higgins "for your invitation to contribute to the column and kind remarks about the play. As regards item II, I am theoretically all in favour, but can't for the moment think of any hobby-horse to ride", one page, 22 May 1971); John Betjeman (printed note thanking the recipient for "taking the trouble to write to me on my appointment as Poet Laureate", 1972); A.L. Rouse (two autograph notes, one reading "Tow books just out have drawn attention to the uniqueness of All Souls College Library. It makes a good story but would illustrate marvellously", one page, 1 February 1972); Harold Acton (brief autograph note from Florence, 15 August 1975); Malcolm Bradbury (autograph letter saying he was "utterly delighted by the illustration to the Times excerpt. I thought that empty room, with the small human figure in the doorway, the dominance of the chavs etc was so perfectly right for the spirit of the book that is was an absolutely exceptional piece of illustration", two pages, 7 November 1975); Antonia Fraser (two typed and two autograph letters, mostly related to her anthology of Love Letters, four pages, 26 March 1976-April 1977); Auberon Waugh (three short notes, one reading "Thank you so much for sending me copies of my article. I find them so decorative that I am playing with the idea of wallpapering my lavatory with them instead of the traditional £10 notes", one page, 24 August 1976); John Fowles (typed letter saying in part "I expect Tom Maschler would be grateful if you could get in another word for Daniel Martin, the new novel to be published this coming October", one page, 26 April 1977) and Victor Pritchett (autograph note saying "Here is my Turgenev. As you will see, I have marked passages from the book in purple crayon and my own summary bridges in green", one page, 11 May 1977); also with copies of typed letters from John Higgins, v.s. (31)
