Taking place on 30 November at 11 am, Chiswick Auctions’ 19th and 20th Century Photographs sale offers a wide-ranging selection of prints, dating from the earliest days of the medium through to the present day. The sale begins with a diverse selection of 19th century processes, albums, and subjects from around the globe, including a rare group of early images of Mecca, the Mahmal, and the Hajj, two portraits by Lewis Carroll, which featured in SFMOMA’s 2002 touring exhibition Dreaming in Pictures, and an eclectic offering of early albums and daguerreotypes.
Our 20th Century section of the sale includes some of the most iconic portraits photography history, including Terry O’Neill’s 1971 image of a windswept Brigitte Bardot on the set of 'Les Petroleuses', and William Klein’s SMOKE + VEIL, PARIS, taken for Vogue in 1958. We are also delighted to be showcasing the private collection of filmmaker Michael Caton-Jones, which centres around American and British social documentary throughout the 20th century, and includes work from Chris Killip, Bert Hardy, Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eiesenstaedt, and many other photographers whose images shaped the way we saw the world through magazines such as Picture Post and LIFE.
