Purpose of job:          To take overall  responsibility for Chiswick Auctions’ marketing strategy, including brand, digital, creative, content, press and PR

Main contacts:          Internal: marketing team, heads of specialist departments, business functions including photography and client services

External: all audiences including clients (buyers and sellers), dealers, other auction houses, print and online media, advertising and PR agencies, suppliers

Context

Chiswick Auctions is a privately owned, well-established London auction house which is fast becoming a major player in the international art market. With 20 specialist departments, regular dedicated and themed sales are held across a breadth of specialisms. In addition, monthly Interiors, Homes and Antiques sales contribute to a busy calendar of 80 auctions per year that cater for all levels of the ‘mid market’.

The main headquarters is based in Chiswick, with a showroom in South Kensington (CSK), and with regular valuation events held in the UK. Chiswick Auctions employs around 57 staff.

The Marketing and design function works across the entire business, playing a crucial role as brand champion, developing engaging and creative content and advertising for specialist departments and the business as a whole, and understanding the needs and aspirations of our different client audiences, both vendors and buyers.

 

The team consists of 6:

 

  • Head of Marketing (this position)

 

  • Marketing Coordinator: works directly with the Head of Marketing and provides coordinator and administrative capacity across the marketing and design functions

 

  • Senior Graphic Designer / Videographer: provides a full graphic design service including video and other media. This position line managers the Junior Graphic Designer

 

  • Junior Graphic Designer: supports the Senior Graphic Designer in his work
  • Content Manager: creates and commissions content and copy for all online and offline platforms and external communications

 

  • Marketing Photographer (shared with Photography dept) - a senior photographer providing marketing photography and advice on visual content

 

The Head of Marketing plays a pivotal role in helping Chiswick Auctions achieve our goal of being the go-to auction house in London outside the ‘big three’. Building on your senior experience gained in a busy environment, you will differentiate Chiswick Auctions as an auction house, deepen and extend our engagement with buyers and sellers, and help share our passion for objects and works of art with the wider world.

Areas of Responsibility

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Strategy and planning

 

  • Devise and implement a marketing strategy and annual plan, within agreed budgets, in line with the company's business plan.

 

  • Work with Heads of Department and the marketing and design team to deliver integrated marketing campaigns in order to achieve sale objectives; work with the Leadership Team on marketing campaigns to achieve business objectives

 

  • Work with the Leadership Team and Senior Graphic Designer on devising, developing and implementing the overall brand strategy for Chiswick Auctions, in line with the business plan

 

  • Be a brand champion for Chiswick Auctions

 

  • Take overall responsibility for the monitoring and evaluation of all marketing activities in order to better inform strategy and plans

 

  • Monitor and analyse competitor activity

 

Digital marketing, content creation, advertising and email marketing

 

  • Oversee the marketing content schedule including the planning of campaigns and delivery of assets

 

  • Oversee the marketing team and help create copy and content for digital, email, social and print channels. This includes the design of all marketing collateral including advertising, brochures, proposals, signage and stationery

 

  • Take overall responsibility for the Digital Marketing Strategy, working closely with our digital agency in audience development and ensuring the successful delivery of campaigns for both the business and individual departments

 

  • Act as a point of contact for advertisers as well as seeking out new advertising opportunities both domestically and internationally

 

  • Help produce consignment proposals, with the relevant Head of Department and others

 

  • Work with/oversee the work of the Content Manager on:

 

  • The implementation of a content strategy / content calendar

 

  • The planning, writing and editing of marketing content and communications both online and offline, including the website, social channels and press

 

  • Developing influencer marketing

 

  • Media outreach, press and public relations

 

Videography

 

  • Oversee the work of the videographer in the production of creative and engaging animation, motion graphics and video content for the website and social channels

 

Website

 

  • Take overall responsibility for website management, copy, images and analytics in line with marketing plans and departmental activities

 

Brand management

 

  • Take overall responsibility for the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Chiswick Auctions brand

 

  • Ensure staff awareness of the brand guidelines and their application, particularly in relation to photography, events, internal and external presentation and all communications

 

 

Finance, HR and Administration

 

  • Take overall responsibility for the management of the marketing budget

 

  • Line manage the Senior Graphic Designer, Content Manager and Marketing Coordinator

 

  • Provide regular reports to the Leadership Team on marketing activity and KPIs

 

  • Take overall responsibility for marketing suppliers including agency management regarding marketing activity

 

  • Oversee the management of the CRM system and email database, and ensure adherence to GDPR good practice

 

General

 

  • Ensure compliance with all internal policies and procedures and any relevant external bodies or processes

 

  • Participate in organization-wide meetings, activities and processes, and develop internal contacts, networks and interactions as appropriate

 

  • Carry out other duties as required by the Directors and Managing Directors

 

 

 

Person Specification

 

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

 

  • A degree-level qualification relevant to marketing

 

  • Extensive experience in the field, either at auction, within the trade or at another relevant institution e.g. gallery, museum or business related to the arts

 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and inter-personal skills, including first class written and spoken English

 

  • Confident, driven and dynamic leader

 

  • Excellent team working skills, and an ability to motivate a wide range of internal and external stakeholders

 

  • Ability to work to tight auction deadlines across a range of busy departments

 

  • Experience working with on projects of all sizes, long- and short-term; demonstrated ability to prioritise a variety of concurrent projects

 

  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office 365 suite

 

  • Strong project management skills with attention to detail

 

  • Ability to thrive within a fast-paced team environment

 

  • An interest in the arts and cultural heritage
