It was amassed over many years by John and Jane Pugh who insisted on investing in only the best examples available, and consequently the collection is notable for its consistently fine condition.

Many of the greatest names in English ceramics are represented: Worcester, Minton, Derby, Spode and Staffordshire, amongst others. A highlight of the collection is a Barr, Flight & Barr Worcester vase in a shield shape, with a central panel painted, as was typical with Worcester of this period, with a topographical view, and dating from about 1808. It is in immaculate and original “factory fresh” condition, the gilding completely untarnished, and is estimated at £2,000-3,000.

William ‘Quaker’ Pegg (1796-1851) is considered one of the finest botanical artists ever to decorate porcelain. A member of The Society of Friends from 1800, he was a fascinating and, in some ways, an eccentric character, and this is reflected in the boldness of his later work as represented on two exceptionally fine Derby plates in the sale. They are both estimated at £1,000-2,000, and are just two more highlights of this important 56 lot collection.

We are still taking in lots for the sale on 11th June – the sale has a huge amount of other good things, including books, silver, bronzes, jewellery etc. More details to come in the coming weeks…

Auction Results

This week’s Arts, Antiques and Interiors sale was well attended and we are not surprised as this week we had the good fortune to sell the contents of a flat that had not been altered since the 1970’s. The flat was just off Park Lane in Mayfair. Bonhams had the first choice of the items and having taken their chosen items, there was plenty remaining and we were invited to enter the remaining items in our forthcoming auctions. These paintings and objects are being sold this week, next week and more lots will appear in the next Fine Arts and Antiques sale.

Three lots 298, 299 and 300, from this clearance were etchings by the widely known German painter, designer, drawer, and draftsman Friedrich Meckseper born in 1936 in Bremen, now living in Berlin. He spent his childhood in Stuttgart and did an apprenticeship as a mechanic at Robert Bosch GmbH from 1952 until 1955. In the year he started at Bosch, he began his art studies, first at the State Academy for Visual Arts in Stuttgart and then at the College for Visual Arts in Berlin from 1957 until 1959. The etchings sold were from this era. Over the past four decades his prints, collages and paintings have been the subject of more than one hundred individual exhibitions, including thirty in museums, throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. It appears these might prove to be a sound financial investment in the future for the lucky buyer today. (See below for more details.)

Lot 80 the 19th Century Canton export ware black and gold lacquered tea caddy had plenty of charm with its raised dragon mask feet this sold for £360. While keeping with the oriental theme lot 189 the late 19th Century the Japanese Meiji period ivory carved models of Oriental Mandarin ducks that were lots of fun sold for £780 (See below.)

The furniture sale always starts at lot 800 and not before 3pm, today there was a good selection of furniture but two outstanding pieces were lots 901 and 902. Both entered by separate vendors but both made from the much appreciated burr walnut. Lot 901 an alcove desk sold for £2625 because of its top quality, possibly made by Maples, but there are no markings. It has a beautiful shape and patina. Perhaps the provenance helped with the price? It was owned by Jack Hulbert – a friend of the Prince of Wales, complete with picture of original owners. Paintings always attract a lot of interest from those that buy because they like it – to the collectors who have a keen eye. This week the range was very broad and while the more expensive pieces were the focus for many, there was a lot of interest shown in the large more contemporary and colourful oil on canvas that continued reaching comfortable prices within their estimates giving new buyers confidence to buy.

Lots 112 and 114, 19th century busts in the antique manner of Grecian nobles & Gods and a Roman noble did exceptionally well exceeding their conservative estimates reaching £976 inclusive and £1054 inclusive (see below), this vendor will be having a great Easter we hope.

Lot 24, a good collection of vintage & later fishing reels and tackle fetched a very reasonable £174 inclusive (see below) if you have been thinking about clearing the garden shed now might be the time.
A highlight of the sale was lot 394 an impressive 18ct white gold and diamond line bracelet, set with 13.08ct of brilliant cut stones, sold for £8495 inclusive (see below) making some ones heart flutter.

The furniture sale held a large mixture of antique, vintage and interior items and we are happy to say the brown good furniture has made a fashionable comeback possibly due to the fact that it is priced right making it the perfect Greener option for the ecological aware. Now the latest trend for young families to buy right, be eco friendly and have fabulous vintage interiors.

Auction Results

This week’s Arts, Antiques & Interiors sale was very large with 1000 Lots. ITV This Morning filmed the finale to their Treasure Hunter competition for charity and Louie Spence and Jeff Brazier brought some levity to the first 30 lots of the auction.

This auction had a wide range of clocks and watches that performed extremely well. Of particular note was Lot 274, a good 19th century French gilded bronze travelling carriage clock by Dent of London, reaching £843 including buyer’s premium & VAT, proving that good items and fine quality will always win through.

Auctioneer Matthew Caddick said “Even when a market seems depressed, this sale showed that good things always sell and this week was no exception when a good selection of clocks and watches were to be sold… particularly when presented along with similar lots within the sale.”

Art specialist Tony Sullivan said of Lot 440 “…the 19th century French Rococo style ormolu clock by Japy Frères … the ormolu was the perfect example of the finest French bronze makers art .. I really took pleasure in cataloguing it.”

Lot 274. A good 19th century French gilded bronze four section travelling carriage clock supported by four Corinthian columns having a white enamel face and Roman numerals by Dent of London contained in original leather bound case with keys. Sold for £843 including buyers premium & VAT

Lot 357. A Jaeger Le Coultre Atmos clock tortoiseshell lacquered face and sides gilt chapter ring with black Roman numerals gilt hands and case. Sold for £632 including buyers premium & VAT

Lot 440. A 19th century French Rococo style ormolu clock by Japy Frères modelled with birds over floriate scrolling child standing below clock face all supported on scrolling legs and base (key in reception) sold together with matching candlesticks. (3) Sold for £1220 including buyers premium & VAT

Lot 672. A mid-sized stainless steel and 18ct gold Cartier Santos dress watch having a brushed metal date dial with gilt Roman chapter and two tone bracelet boxed with instructions. Sold for £1220 including buyers premium & VAT

The Antiques and Fine Art with Printed Books & Manuscripts sale was a busy affair. Highlights of the auction were many and it seems that quality always shines through when collectors and dealers battle it out for the best in the sale. A couple of interesting small collections that sold well were the three miniature Moorcroft vases bearing the brown printed MacIntyre stamp and green signature to their bases. All sold strongly within estimates. The collection of Tunbridge ware created a lot of interest and sold in its entirety. While lot 351, the fine Meissen chocolate pot and cover with puce floral decoration, (fourteen pieces in the lot) reached £1580 including buyers premium and VAT shows that old style antiques that are fabulous are always highly desirable.

A small pencil drawing on paper of a ‘Gent’ in a top hat with a brolly by Kees Van Dongen (1877 – 1968), the Fauves artist from Rotterdam, who participated in the controversial 1905 salon d’Automne exhibition Paris, sold for £1050 including buyers premium & VAT .

While lot 202 a collection of 18th century and later Chinese small porcelain wares over over 40 items and lot 212 a 19th century Chinese famille verte rouleau vase sold for £730 and £3600 including buyers premium & VAT showing that the Oriental market is still popular.

A fun side to this sale was the late Victorian cast iron promotional vending machines with lots 231 and 232 exceeding their estimates and creating a lot of excitement, with lot 232 fetching £8680 including buyers premium and VAT. While there were also four lots of 1960’s Coca Cola promotional fridges including lot 402, an upright Coca Cola Cavalier vending machine painted in white with logos in red sold for £2700 including buyers premium & VAT.

Tom Keane says “I’ve taken a completely different view of vintage Coca Cola machines.”

Antiques & Fine Art with Printed Books & Manuscripts, Tuesday March 5th at 11am

Books & Manuscripts; lots 1 – 200, Antiques & Fine Art; lots 201 – onwards

Leading the Book and Manuscript section of the sale is a remarkably well preserved archive of approximately 200 autograph letters and documents relating to the Sandford family of Sandford Hall in Shropshire. Dating from between 1604 and 1777, the letters concern everything from the day to day running of the estate – the importation of cattle from Ireland, the trimming of hedgerows, the relative merits of servants – to more weighty political matters, with many referring to the King and to Parliament. Some are sent from Dublin – with rare post marks – and others from Bath and Chelsea. A love letter is addressed to the writer’s “Sweete Harte … my dearly beloved paramour.” This fascinating record of life in England and Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries is estimated at £4,000-6,000 (lot 197).

Other highlights of the sale include:

Lot 11: Ridinger, Johann Elias. A Collection of 124 exceptionally fine engravings of wild and domesticated animals printed in Augsburg in 1780, including a remarkably athletic hippo and a sea lion whose facial expression has to be seen to be believed. Estimate: £700-1,000

Lot 15: Maffei, Giovanni Pietro. Indiarum orientalium occidentaliumque descriptio. [Cologne: c. 1593]. An exceptionally fine engraved world map, complete with galleons and sea monsters, 260 x 480mm. Bound into Maffei’s Historiarum indicarum libri XVI. The vast unexplored areas of a partly mythical southern continent – Antarctica – are designated “Terra Australis Nondum Cognita” (literally “Southern lands not yet known”), a term which would give its name to Australia. Estimate: £1,000-1,500

Lot 17: Birket, John. The God-father’s Advice to His Son. London: 1699. Exceptionally finely bound in contemporary red morocco elaborately decorated in gilt, with charming contemporary inscriptions from one
“Bridgett Dixie”, an early owner of the book. This is one of those occasions when a binding is probably more interesting than the book inside! Estimate: £300-500

Lot 24: PORTLAND MUSEUM – A Catalogue of the Portland Museum. London: 1786. Engraved frontispiece depicting the Portland Vase, which is often lacking. Contemporary calf. ONE OF APPROXIMATELY 2,000 COPIES. AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE, FRESH COPY. Estimate: £1,000-1,500

Lot 27: Tomkins, Petro William (engraver). [The Birth and Triumph of Cupid]. London: 1795-1823. 24 fine stipple engraved plates, some with decorative borders cut out and laid down. Contemporary burgundy morocco. There is something heartrending about these little engravings which chart the mixed fortunes of Cupid. Some of the captions – “Going Alone”, “In Vexation Breaks his Bow”, “Turns away in Dispair [sic]” – give you an idea of the sort of day he’s having. All ends well, however: the last engraving is titled “Uniting the Hearts.” An utterly charming, and very scarce, collection. Estimate: £500-800

Lot 31: BOOK OF HOURS, in Old Church Slavonic. Moscow: c. 1650. Printed in red and black on c. 360 leaves, with some manuscript decoration. Contemporary panelled calf with brass studs. EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Estimate: £700-1,000

Lot 34: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, for the year MDCCC. London: 1800. Including Volta’s paper On the Electricity excited by the mere Contact of Conducting Substances, THE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ELECTRIC BATTERY, and a number of important papers by Herschel. Contemporary calf. Testifying to its importance, Volta’s paper is included in “Printing and the Mind of Man” (usually shortened to “PMM”), a catalogue of the most significant books in the history of science and ideas. Estimate: £300-500

Lot 44: Ahmad Ibn ‘Arabsh Ah. Ahemdis Arabsiadiae vitae et rerum gestarum Timuri, qui vulgo Tamerlanes. Franeker: 1767. 2 volumes bound in 3, text in Arabic and Latin. Contemporary limp red morocco. RARE. Estimate: £2,500-3,500

Lot 118: Hockney, David. Large one page autograph letter to a child, with the original envelope, both with each letter written in a different colour, 1965. Estimate: 2,000-3,000

Lot 164: Parrish, Maxfield. The Knave of Hearts. New York: 1925. Spectacular coloured illustrations by Maxfield Parrish. Original pictorial cloth. Maxfield Parrish is perhaps better known in America than he is over here: the original of the stunning illustration which features on the back cover of the catalogue, “The Manager Draws the Curtain”, recently sold at auction in New York for $1,000,000. Estimate: £300-500

Lot 165: Picasso, Pablo. A Los Toros. Monte Carlo: 1961. 4 original lithographs by Picasso, including one printed in 24 colours. Original pictorial cloth. Estimate: £700-1,000

Lot 184: Twain, Mark. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. London: 1884. Original cloth. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, preceding the first American edition by 4 months. Estimate: £700-1,000

Printed Books, Manuscripts and Maps are lots 1 – 200, Fine Antiques and Art start at lot 201 and will continue throughout the rest of the day. This sale is available as an illustrated catalogue and is a LIVE on-line auction, please go to our website for more information.

Auction Report

The sale of Arts, Antiques & Interiors yesterday proved that our weekly sales are just one of the prize assets of being a small auction room in a competitive market against the larger houses. The speed of our weekly turnaround of items proves that once vendors have decided an object must go we can take it in that day, while our buyers know ‘no two weeks are ever the same’ and something exciting always turns up for sale. This week was no exception and we have to admit we were delighted by the results. Many items came in on the valuation days running up to the sale and it proved to be good quality especially some small Jade items including a Chinese miniature father with a boy on his back that sold for £3300 including premium & VAT.

Tracie Vallis said “I was very busy this Tuesday as throughout the day I met new buyers to our auction, filled with the anticipation of buying jewellery and household furniture. So with this in mind I thought I would add a little advice for those that fear the first steps of buying in auction.”

View the auction carefully, preferably with time on your hands, until you get to know what you’re looking for. Spend some time examining the items for their good and bad qualities. Bring a tape measure and a note-pad, or buy a catalogue (we sell self-printed catalogues on the viewing days). Every sale is on-line with photographs by Sunday evening.

On the sale day register to bid well before the chosen lot you want comes up for sale. You will be given a bidding paddle with your own bidding number, then find a comfortable seat in the main room. The auctioneers talk very fast until you get used to their rhythm so it is worth sitting there for a while to get used to it all. Behind the auctioneer is a large TV where images of the lots are shown – this is to help refresh your memory. As your lot number comes up prepare your bidding paddle as this number links directly to you if you are the lucky winner. Always have a fixed price limit in your mind – do not get carried away, make sure the auctioneer sees your first bid so as a novice wave your paddle above your head. This may sound obvious but the paddle waving is the positive way to ensure in the crowded room you have the auctioneer’s attention. Once your first bid is taken he will keep looking at you until all the bidding in the room is finished so you can be a little more discreet if you like. Once you have finished with your bidding and if you are the lucky winner the auctioneer will write your paddle number on his auctioneer’s book, head back to the reception area and pay for your lots. Collecting your lots is best done the day of the sale but definitely must be done by the Thursday 6pm the week of the sale.

Lot 24. A small 19th century Chinese Meiping baluster vase, white glazed with red splash. Estimate: 60-80 – sold for £280 including premium & VAT

Lot 962. A 19th century mahogany chiffonier. Estimate: 120-180 – sold for £460 including premium & VAT
